Festivals are facing challenges
When I was at Inferno Music Converence in Oslo on April 06, I was listening to some interesting panels about festivals.
At the first panel, four great festivals were presenting themselves. Mystic Festival in Poland and Midgardsblot in Norway sounded very interesting, and I was especially charmed by ARTmania in Romania and Water Tower Art Fest in Bulgaria. Three of the four speakers were women. "Purely by accident", the organisation told me afterwards. Or maybe it's because festivals become more interesting once more women get involved at a high level?
The other panel was about open air festivals and climate change. The question was: how you can organize open air festivals with a rising probability of extreme weather conditions. It becomes more likely to suffer from bad weather so much, that you have to cancel some or all shows. How does the business deal with it? On the artist/agents side, more and more agents demand festivals to have a bad-weather-insurance. But smaller festivals, especially those with free entrance, are already fighting to survive with rising costs for everything. They can't afford a bad-weather-insurance and are asking artists and agents to be more lenient, more cooperative.
With the bookings for Conincx Pop Festival I recognize the demands from agents in the contracts. As an agent myself, I have a more cooperative attitude towards festivals. In the end, I still see the weather as an 'act of god', where both sides suffer. Though at the end of the panel in Oslo, the question was raised if the extreme weather, caused by climate change, isn't actually an 'act of humans'. The panel didn't find a solution on how to deal with that.

Remembering Nirvana at Paradiso
When Nirvana sold out their Paradiso Amsterdam show (Nov. 25, 1991) in 15 minutes, there was no internet available to the general public.
Advance ticket sales were via physical ticket outlets, including post offices. Nirvana fans were sleeping rough, in front of the post office doors all over The Netherlands, before ticket sales started early in the morning.
Paperclip Agency booked all Dutch Nirvana shows. We were the exclusive agency for all of Europe when Nirvana did their 38-shows-double-bill tour of Europe with Sub Pop label-mates TAD in 1989, we were the exclusive booker for The Netherlands when Sonic Youth made the promoter of a big indoor festival in Rotterdam also book Nirvana (at that moment supporting Sonic Youth during their Euro-tour) in September 1991, and we were the exclusive Dutch booker for The Netherlands when Nirvana did their sold out Paradiso Amsterdam show two months later.
I was at the show, accompanying my colleague at Paperclip Agency at the time, who was first contact at our company for Nirvana. When I saw Nirvana in Apeldoorn in 1989, I was not that impressed. But two years on, the band had turned into a spectacular and exhilarating live act. The hall exploded.
Before the show, in Paradiso's basement, where the dressing rooms are, I unexpectedly ran into Dave Grohl. I knew Dave well because I was the European agent for Washington D.C. hardcore punk rock band Scream. I had also driven their tour-van one day, doing 160 km on the Belgian highways, with all Scream-guys screaming (indeed) about the speed: "Go Robbie Go!!!".
But my Paperclip-colleague had not told me that Dave Grohl was now in Nirvana, and would therefore be at the Paradiso. Dave recognized me immediately, but I was baffled, and did not recognize Dave instantly. He then walked away angrily, saying "oh, now you don't want to know me anymore!" (which still makes no sense to me, to be honest).
Anyway, it was a great show by Nirvana that night at Amsterdam's Paradiso.
Now that Paradiso celebrates 55 years, one of the special activities is showing the video-recordings that were made of the Nirvana-show, on a big screen in Paradiso's main hall. This will be on my birthday, as it happens.

Jill Barber has released new album "Homemaker"

Hazmat Modine release new album "Bonfire"
Hazmat Modine draws from the rich soil of American music of the 20s and 30s through to the 50s and early 60s, blending elements of early Blues, Hokum Jug band, Swing, New Orleans R&B, and Jamaican Rocksteady. A pointer to Hazmat’s methodology can be found in the band’s configuration. Schuman’s guitar, diatonic harmonica and intensely earthy vocals set the tone. A solid battery of sounds – tuba, accordion, trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, tenor and baritone saxes, piccolo and duduk, banjo, mandocello and steel guitar – explores the textural and melodic outer limits of Hazmat’s meticulously woven compositions, while guitars and drums lock down a groove and provide sonic spicing. Hazmat Modine has just released their new album "Bonfire" through Jaro Medien.

Alex Henry Foster has to cancel shows
Alex Henry Foster is suffering from health problems. "It’s with profound sadness that I have to announce that, due to my still too fragile health condition and my specialists’ persistent disapproval, I had to take the dreadful decision to not only cancel my presence with the Long Shadows at festivals this summer — and along with it the joyful expectation I had of meeting you once again — but also to cancel the massive autumn European tour I was supposed to announce next week." All shows will be rescheduled to 2024. "But regardless of my heartrending feelings, it’s nonetheless the best and most sensible decision I could make for the sake of my recovery at this point." We wish him a speedy recovery, lots of strength, and look forward to see him again next year!
