Festivals in dire straits
Hilde and me were on an InterRail-holiday, by train indeed, July 8-31, and visited Berlin, Elbląg (NE-Poland; not far from Gdansk, Masuria, and the Vistula Lagoon/Spit), Kraków, Praha, Linz/Austria, Ljubljana, Innsbruck and Freiburg (Breisgau).
Full of impressions, and mentally refreshed, we're back in full swing.
As you quite likely know, the U.K.'s festival scene is in dire straits. Many U.K.-festivals had to cancel, or did not plan a 2024-edition at all.
In Roisin O'Connor's 'Now Hear This' newsletter from U.K.-daily The Independent it is said that continental European festivals do quite a bit better (although we all know that there are problems here too). This is, Roisin O'Connor writes, because of various reasons: the Continentals do not book the same acts all the time; there are added bonuses (beautiful location, excursions, good food ... ); ticket prices are less crazy.
As you can see, everything is relative. If the writer, after attending many British and continental festivals, reaches these conclusions, while in the meantime I do know that many continental festivals do not necessarily have all these perks (ticket prices did go up dramatically in the last few years, for instance; and food often is mediocre and overpriced), I can only conclude that it's even worse in the U.K.
It is safe to say however that on both sides of the Channel it is crucial for festivals to improve, to do better. Festivals should not forget that they are more than merely a party and a money-making-machine, but are also a community event.
