Intro from our President

As the Holidays approach and the Year draws to an end, the ISME office and Board continues to be busy planning for events ahead.  The most proximal event reflects ISME’s ongoing efforts to promote a robust microbial ecology community worldwide. In 2018 ISME entered into a MOU with the Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI) and will be participating in their Annual meeting in Hyderabad India in early December 2018. Past ISME president Colin Murrell and several ISME Board members have coordinated ISME activities with this event, including meeting with ISME ambassadors in India and surrounding countries and an ISME-AMI Joint Scientific Session on "Microbial Ecology in the Era of Next generation Sequencing". A hearty thanks and best wishes to Colin and his team for the planning and implementation of the first-ever ISME-AMI joint events. The ISME Executives and Board are looking forward to more regional efforts like this one in years to come, to help support our Ambassadors, promote the ISME Journal and the Society, and to encourage the international growth and good communications among microbial ecologists worldwide.

It  has been a fantastic year for ISME, most especially considering the very successful ISME17 meeting in Leipzig, Germany. We look forward to continued planning for future events in 2019, and we are continuing to work diligently with local organizing committee for the upcoming ISME18 meeting that will take place in Capetown South Africa in 2020.

Cheers to all, and best wishes for Holidays and the New Year,

Ed DeLong - ISME President

A word from ambassador director Nicole Webster

It has been a busy 12 months for our ISME Ambassadors, with over €30,000 allocated from the Ambassador program to support a suite of activities spanning local meetings, training workshops, early career networking events, student travel, invited speakers and targeted initiatives in Chile, South Africa and India to grow microbial ecology and the society in those regions. With recent development of the Ambassador program and expansion to include early-mid career researchers, we have decided to formalise the process for appointing our ISME Ambassadors, agreeing on a 2-year initial appointment followed by a 4-year term, bringing the Ambassador service in line with the term for ISME board members.  Many of our current Ambassadors have offered years of outstanding service to the program and in early 2019 we will be looking for active and enthusiastic ISME members to take up the reins and continue in their footsteps.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank our ISME Ambassadors for their service to the society in 2018 and to remind ISME members to familiarise themselves with the Ambassador for their region, as they are the first point of contact for ISME support of local initiatives.

The Margalef Summer Colloquia “Ecology through the omics lens” was organized by ISME Ambassador for Spain Dr. Ramiro Logares along with Dr. Javier del Campo and Dr. Cèlia Marrasé. The ISME sponsored meeting brought together a diverse, international group of young scientists using novel “omics” techniques to learn about new developments in the field, share ideas and build new collaborations.
