Dear Sufi Trail friend ,

The spring season is on the doorstep. We gathered with many cyclists and hikers in the various trade fairs. While flowers are already popping out we are ready to hit the road and smell them, see them and report more Sufi news. See you on the road to Konya and beyond.

love,

Sufi on bike

Every child that grows up in the Netherlands grows up with bicycles. If you also love traveling, then mothers may have to run after you on your tricycle. I too could not wait and was soon on the highway with my tricycle. With the same enthusiasm, I now look forward to our cycling guide: “Sufi on Bike”. The guide consists of practical matters, cycling maps with instructions and places of interest along the way. The list of overnight stays is kept online, but there is also a short version in the Sufi on Bike guide.

A little patience for my fellow enthusiasts, with a little luck we have the book in our hand this spring. You can already order a copy so that we can increase the printing numbers

Jerusalem and Sufi Trail

When you go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, it is almost impossible not to be charmed by the Sufi trail if you read that the trail follows the old Ottoman pilgrim route to Mecca. When preparing my trip I first thought of following one of the old Crusader routes. That scoured my pacifist beliefs. In that sense, the discovery of the Sufi trail was a godsend.

For me, pilgrimage in the 21st century is more than just going to a holy place. Of course, Jerusalem is important because of its high symbolic value. The city is the sacred place where three religions are at home.

The more to the east, the more the trusted world disappears. Does not pilgrimage begin when, as a pilgrim, you succeed in keeping familiar ways of perception and judgment broad? That requires practice and patience.

As preparation, I am taking a Turkish course in the hope that this will provide some flexibility during meetings. In the meantime, my curiosity has aroused about Sufism. My little reading round teaches me that it is far from easy to describe this phenomenon. The mystical tradition of Islam, Islamic mysticism, the mystical heart of Islam to list some book titles.

My discovery starts on April 19th. I have faith in it. Going the road will give unexpected answers. Konya, the goal of this stage, keeps the desire alive. In June I hope to eat cherries in the city of Mevlana.

Marcel Schuurmans

South-Korean cyclist

We were surprised with a world cyclist from South-Korea, he was already cycling from home to Morocco and Jin Seok Bang is cycling the Sufi Trail to complete his world tour. With his bike that has already travelled a lot of paths, he sent us photos with the Sufi Trail passport at Istanbul on Bike, which produced beautiful images and a lovely hand-writing note.

& Muslim pilgrim

Among our hikers, a world hiker has also arrived on the Sufi Trail. For those who are not yet following Samuel Courtin, you can admire his journey from France to Mecca here. Ahmet Yiğit has welcomed Samuel with open arms and together they went to Güneyköy.
The villagers come from Dagestan and make delicacies and specialties from their culture. It is also a place of pilgrimage for Şeyh Muhammed Medeni, a tomb of the Sheikh from Dagestan.

Cheerful pilgrims

Dancing and walking with open arms in a fast empty space, an image that reminds me of the singing German Dervish. On one of our media channels, a cheerful video suddenly appeared of a singing Dervish who walked cheerfully with open arms through a vast landscape. We had no idea who it was and if it was on the Sufi Trail. Regardless of where it came from, it immediately aroused curiosity. The cheerful video shows a lot in just under 36 seconds.

Among other things a few pleasures of a pilgrim, indeed the vastness of the landscape around you, cheerfulness you become so cheerful that you start singing spontaneously and you open your arms, you are open to what comes your way.

This short anecdote as most pilgrims loves to feel the liberation and freedom that this singing pilgrim shared with us on Facebook. Coming together and sharing experiences is a big part of the pilgrimage. We welcome our digital audience with open arms at the various social traffic sources. Wanna see the movie?

Our Belgian delegation is closely linked to the foundation. The Belgium trade fair weekend is made possible thanks to our hostess Annemie. We are hosted with much love and care and everything is covered in Belgian elegance. This year too, the Bicycle and Walking Fair in Ghent was staffed together with Annemie, Iris and Sedat. This time we had a picnic table to decorate as our Sufi Trail stand. A special event was the second picnic alias meeting table for our "stall" is served as a discussion table by various men who have walked or are going to walk the Sultans Trail or Sufi Trail, nicknamed “the route of Ludo”.

It became fun on “the route of Ludo” and it became even more beautiful with the two beautiful photobooks that Ludo had brought one of the Sultans Trail in 2018 and the Sufi Trail in 2019. The Europe cyclists foundation and Pirola our publisher were within a stone's throw from our Sultans Trail and Sufi Trail table hence we were able to place a beautiful "giant" Europe Bicycle flag. The connection between the routes and the walkers and cyclists makes a beautiful unity.
All roads lead to Istanbul.

Tradefair in Utrecht, The Netherlands

The Sufi Trail was present in the beautiful pop-up village of Pilgrims in Utrecht and at the information tables for walkers. It is a reunion of many travelers and interested. For three days, like-minded people gather and share the best stories and anecdotes.

For those who just want to enjoy the famous world cyclist Frank van Rijn, who masters the art of turning the adventures into a most comic show. He is the inspirator for many Dutch cyclists and has cycled and camped all over the world his whole lifetime. Even at 70+ he still cycles through Africa and is joining us for a Sufi Trail tour this autumn.

We recorded his lecture in Dutch you can see the entire Sahara & Sahel lecture on YouTube. If you would like to take a trip with us to experience these adventures yourself and enjoy wild camping, you can book a cycling trip with Frank van Rijn on the Sufi Trail. See agenda or webshop.

To get into the bike mood you can read his beautiful cycling adventures on frankvanrijn.nl
