The magic of winter overcomes us, suddenly you are deeper and deeper into our being just because the seasons allow us to move along with nature. In the northern traditions with the “Sami” there are even eight seasons. We just celebrated the light being born after the period of constant darkness. While there are so many changes around us, our human nature stays fairly stable, take for instance walking. We have been simply walking on earth...
Just giving you some ideas for 2022 where to walk and cycle. For September, we have hiking with Linda on the agenda. This spring you can hike with the Sufi Trail caravan and for autumn you can cycle or hike with us, dates are all set. If you have a GAP year or a sabbatical, we have a lovely story to inspire you and more news of gatherings and friends along the Sufi Trail in Turkey. Sufi Trail guardian Angel, Tuncay Erik, even made the national news in Turkey and Ahmet is ready in Ormanika in Kurtköy to welcome you.

Dreaming of the Sufi hiking caravanWe are organizing, but mostly getting excited about the hiking caravan. It will be the first time we will hike the whole Sufi Trail from Istanbul to Konya. While developing the Sufi Trail, we did parts as time was limited. We then admired the people who hiked it all in one stretch like solo female Natalia Mihai, the couple Elisabeth and Johannes Norz and Susan Elliott and the list of hikers who did 40 days of hiking goes on… One day I said we should know more about the feeling of 40 days hiking in a row, you then are completely into the pilgrimage and the 40 days of isolation, fasting, and other isn’t 40 days for nothing. The curiosity and the books Natalia and Susan wrote the articles of our hikers couple Norz and also journalist Marian Brehmer who cycled the trail encouraged us even more to at least do the 40 days once in our lifetime, ourselves. Zoom meeting Sufi hiking caravan
Cosy at home in the winter by the stove and of course dreaming of the next trips in 2022. Together with our fellow travellers, we are already having a lot of anticipation. Training is in full swing, and we even fear that our walkers will walk us out. Bubbling with energy, I hear from Odile Keulers and Gülay Kahraman their top performances, 100 km Kennedy walk, daily km numbers are increasing rapidly, so the ladies are well-prepared. Fred is ready as logistics manager, and we have mapped out a list of 40 days of hiking pleasure. Questions also arise about the caravan on the road, the Turkish trivia and more. That is why there is a zoomin info evening special about the Sufi Trail hiking caravan in Turkey on Thursday 20th of January @ 19.00 Amsterdam time. We invite you to read this lovely read of Hala and Michael on the Sufi Trail in their GAP year diaries… Prior to our arrival in Turkey, I was made aware of the Sufi Trail, a 40 day, 801 km hike that takes you through the Turkish countryside from Istanbul to Konya. The trail passes through the town of Kurtköy, where we were to be based for a few weeks as part of our Turkey Workaway experience. After a discussion with our Workaway host Chevrel, I had come up with a plan for a two-day hike from our village of Kurtköy, to İznik, an old Roman town at the head of İznik Lake. Tuncay Erik

Tuncay is a Sufi host in Osmaneli with a great sense of responsibility for his region and the pilgrims on their way to Konya. As a responsible host, he takes care of the signposting in his region and makes sure that pilgrims get the help they might need in Osmaneli and its surroundings. Sometimes he only gives a stamp in the Sufi Trail passport of the pilgrims, and in other occasions, he arranges a place to sleep. But in all cases, he is there if you require help from him. Osmaneli region is well known for its history and from the pilgrimage routes to Jerusalem and Mecca. You may find well-preserved caravanserai, Han’s, Mosques, churches and many remains from the Roman and Ottoman periods. Tuncay can tell you about the history of the region and as an amateur field researcher also about the habitat and environmental issues. When you start your journey hiking or cycling the start is mostly with Ahmet who now has a beautiful campsite for the pilgrims. There are quite a lot of animal hikers stopping there, including dogs and ducks, and we just spotted a little chicken finding a warm spot for winter at Ahmet’s Yiğit ormanika. It’s a popular breakfast place for local visitors, as breakfast time is nowadays a traditional celebration time for family and friends. When you are all set for your journey, don’t forget to stop by and collect your Sufi art stone. |

Iranian pioneers journey full
|
|
As part of the development of the Rumi Trail, we cycled in Turkey last year. We have mapped out about 900 km of this route for cyclists. In October, another pioneering tour for cyclists is on the agenda for Rumi Trial in Iran. Despite the fact that we gave very little publicity to this trip, it was quickly full.
