Dear Sufi Trail friend ,

Movement is sometimes sitting still and receiving or watching your own light. The long wait for the seed to become a flower, the clouds to become rain, the sun to get to the summer season on earth, the preparations for the journey to be made there are more cycles and turns then we realize. There is some really exciting news from Abdulshakoor Alakkad and dancing star Alper Akçay. Abdulshakoor Alakkad produced and presented their Sufi Trail documentary to the Bahçeşehir University. We have some lovely YouTube tips from our Belgium Sufi pilgrim Marcel Schuurmans, who is now ready to hike the Sufi Trail. Slowly movement is coming back in traveling the globe after the pandemic pause. Also ready to travel? For October 2021 we invite you to join our Sufi Trail hike!

love,

Semazen Alper Akçay

Abdulshakoor Alakkad presented his Sufi Trail documentary to the Bahçeşehir University. Abdulshakoor Alakkad together with the film crew managed in midst of the pandemic to create the most amazing shots of Semazen Alper Akçay on the Sufi Trail. On cold cave nights, sunny Iznik lake days and philosophy talks with the Sufi Trail philosopher Refik Şimşek and many more highlights they shot an amazing piece of art. As the documentary was shown to the Bahçeşehir University jury we are holding our breath to hear how it’s received. It’s been apart from shooting in difficult circumstances a journey of all emotions. We followed the film crew's footsteps and felt a deep love and respect for them as they had to find back their creative force in the most challenging human emotions. There was a point that they could have lost their whole family without being able to contact them in Palestine. To then be strong and grab your creative challenge back up again and create a piece of art is the tapestry of life that we all experience and need to share. There is light at the end of the tunnel and as knowone can speak the language of the heart better as Rumi “It’s the wound where the light gets in”. We hope the light will shine bright for this Sufi Trail documentary and for the film crew and the lives it will touch once it’s out in the film world.

We of course keep you posted of the film produced by Abdulshakoor Alakkad and Omar Fartass.

Look at a Turkish series

Yunus Emre
Yunus Emre, the love journey,

Traveling with your feet along the Sufitrail is difficult now. Traveling in your head in time and space is easier.
I discovered the English subtitled Turkish series Yunus Emre, the journey of love on youtube. This 44-part series, broadcast on the Turkish Public Broadcasting Service in 2015 and 2016, was a success with millions of viewers. Currently, this series is also shown on Pakistani TV and is even recommended by the Prime Minister of that country.
The series is based on the life of Yunus Emre, one of the greatest Turkish poets and a popular saint. He lived in Anatolia in the last half of the 13th century and the first quarter of the 14th century. Very little is historically known about his life. A lot of information can be found in the Sufi stories and legends. Romance is inevitable when making a TV series.
In the series, Yunus Emre is portrayed as a self-righteous judge. Under the leadership of Tapduk Emre, a charismatic Sufi master, he transforms into a Sufi totally devoted to God and seeking unity. And it is precisely this process of change that is interesting for anyone interested in a profound spirituality. Yunus's battle with himself, his supposed progress repeatedly punished mercilessly by his tutor. That teacher puts him back on the road to the next stage where the whole process repeats itself. In the end, the great poet is born who gives shape to his experiences of his quest in beautiful poems.
There is still more to discover. There are the unforgettable expositions of Tapduk Emre to his dervishes. Admittedly not always easy to follow for the interested, also partly due to the rather peculiar English subtitles. But those who do not cling to words gain a wonderful access to the wisdom of the Sufi tradition.
