Dear Sufi Trail friend ,

Susan's book is flying over the world from the US to Australia and all because of her good friends. Since the book was in our hands we soon realized Susan is a globetrotter with friends everywhere. It's just a book and our hearts know it's also so much more for so many reasons. Like to know about this remarkable English lady who hiked the Sufi Trail with her Dixon Roller pack? Just order your copy and enjoy this Anatolian adventure.

We look back at some stories of travellers that visited Sufi Trail and share some of their inspiring hiking & cycling stories and movies. And on top of it, in the midst of a pandemic, creative spirits even made the documentary Nur about the Sufi Trail!

We are excited to meet you on one of the Sufi Trail journeys in 2022. If you like to join us on the Sufi Trail... save the date for your Sufi adventure in 2022.
love,
Sedat & Iris

17 December - Sheb-i Arus

The Wedding Day
Every 17 December, the night of Mevlana's death, thousands of people from all around the world gather at the magnificient 13th century Mevlana Mausoleum to celebrate Seb-i Arus, his 'Wedding Day', his reunion with his Beloved, with the Divine.

During his last hours his wife pleaded with Mevlana to not leave and ask God to let him stay here a little longer. Mevlana's reply was thus:

Am I a thief?
Have I stolen someone's goods?
Is this why you would confine me here and keep me from being rejoined with my Love?

So we see his opinion of death. It is the time of release from this cage of the body; the time when the bird of the soul flies free. But it is thus for the soul which has realized the Divine within and has become purified of all earthly desires. For those on the path of Mevlana, Seb-i Arus is a celebration, like a festival of the beauties being offered every moment to the Lovers of God.

According to Mevlana's teachings, human beings are born twice, once of their mothers and the second time of their own bodies. The real birth is the second, spiritual birth. Mevlevi dervishes, guided by a spiritual leader, are expected to live as members of the Mevlevi Order, according to the principles of his teaching. A long period of spiritual progress is necessary before they can participate in the whirling dance, for which they wear a tall cap symbolizing the tomb of carnality, and a white robe which is its shroud.

Susan Elliott's book arrived

Strong in humbleness, sweet in humour, wondrous in nature and ways of life. This journey tells the story of hospitality and hearts that meet each other, coming from all cultures. Anatolia is a tapestry of cultures with an ever-changing landscape, geographically, socially, and spiritually. Susan Elliott pulling her Dixon Roller pack through this challenging terrain, without speaking Turkish, after a hip operation, camping wild and on a small budget managed to report a momentous six weeks pilgrimage on the Sufi Trail in Turkey. In May 2021, she was diagnosed with cancer for the fourth time, being resilient like a reed meant the Sufi Trail book was coming fast. This is what is in our hands, the story of a walk through life meeting the things our hearts call out for and love to share.

We were so happy to hold the book in our hands it is like a gem already by just touching the book, let alone enjoying the pictures and writing.

We are grateful, happy and honoured to work with talented people, together with Merel van Essen and Susan's writing talents the book almost made itself.

Linda and Ahmet waymarking the Sufi Trail

İhla Mur (Linda) & Ahmet Yiğit

When the autumn ends and all the leafs have fallen from the trees, most of the work on the trails ends. Winter is coming and it is time to contemplate.

Linda Pijl and Ahmet Yigit have walked one more time the Sufi Trail part between Kurtköy and Güneyköy to see the waymarking and make a list of to be done next year.
On the Sufi Trail, most of the hikers want to reach Konya before or on the 17th of December to celebrate the Sheb-i Arus at the tomb of Rumi.

Winter is very although very tempting also very quiet.
Early spring next year, Linda and Ahmet will do some hard work to welcome hikers on newly waymarked trail with some new sections which are more interesting than the previous parts.

Next newsletter we will have more news from Yalova.
Linda and Ahmet have both very nice own stamps, and you can collect at Ahmet’s place in Yalova Sufi Trail stones, hand painted by Linda.

Caravan dreams come true

The Sufi Trail caravan dream has been there since we started in 2016. We hiked parts of the Sufi Trail and enthusiastically started the Sufi Trail not knowing where the road would take us. Even Though some the pandemic is making most things insecure we are sure this dream is ready to be realised. It’s time to gather the creative crowd to get together and hike the Sufi Trail with each his own unique magic to bring to the Sufi Trail.

We hope you are also looking as much forward as us to hike this Sufi Trail in 40 days, old school, but not so old school as we have luggage transport. But with your tent carried to the next camp spot every day. We have something to look forward to: hiking the Sufi Trail starting 8th of May 2022 in Yalova, if you already know you are part of this journey you can book your transport fee and welcome package on our website and with the button below. See you on the Sufi Trail caravan 2022...

Cycling the Sufi Trail with us!

Just to get an idea of how it feels to cycle in Turkey we have some stories to read. Already some cyclists or groups have enjoyed to Sufi Trial on bike. It takes around two weeks to cycle from Istanbul to Konya at a slow pace. We had the lcuk of the world that world cyclist Davide Travelli cycled Sufi Trail. He made five YouTube episodes about the Sufi Trial on a mountain bike, giving a perfect impression of the cycling route.

We cycled partly up till Bilecik with Günes Ozturk who also wrote a lovely story about our journey. If you are interested in joining our Sufi cycling caravan, we love to see you there and show you the never ending beauty of exploring Turkey by bicycle.
