THOUGHTS WE SHARE
Rob Berends writes: The UK is part of Europe. Really! In the (live) music biz, people often write 'Europe/UK'. This is also true for some on mainland Europe, unfortunately. This is no doubt because North-American and British too often have (or maybe even try to paint) the wrong picture: they (pretend to) think Europe and the U.K. are two separate, and equal, entities. But they are not. Those from mainland Europe do know that, but give in to the mistake. The U.K. is officially and scientifically (geography) part of Europe (see the map); Iceland too, Russia west of the Ural mountains too, for instance. Rather than giving in to the mistake, simply state the facts, I would say. Do not write 'Europe/UK' but 'Europe (always includes UK)', as an example. Or just write 'Europe'. Won't get you into legal difficulties! When you give in to the mistake, you strengthen it. By writing 'Europe/UK' you pretend these two are equal entities, and also you support a colonial view, maybe even an imperialistic view. Europe has some 740 million inhabitants total, the U.K. some 70 million. Actually, writing 'Europe/UK' is just about as stupid and wrong as writing 'Britain/Scotland' or 'USA/Texas' or 'The Netherlands/Friesland', isn't it? Hilde Spille writes: Ig Nobels and SXSW – is travelling to the USA still safe and OK? Since 1991, the alternative Nobel prize ‘Ig Nobels’ was held in Boston/USA. Last month they announced to move their ceremony from Boston/USA to Zürich/Switzerland, indefinitely, due to concerns over travel visa. “During the past year, it has become unsafe for our guests to visit the country”, Marc Abrahams told the press. “We cannot, in good conscience, ask the new laureates, or the international journalists covering the event, to travel to the United States this year”. Also last month, many people of the music business from all over the world travelled to Austin/USA to visit SXSW. A year ago, several bands could not perform there because they where not allowed to enter the USA . Is it so much safer for musicians and people from the music business to enter the USA than it is for scientists? Of course not! Many international artists have had to c ancel their US-performances in the last year. That doesn’t mean that SXSW should move to another country too, just as Ig Nobels did. SXSW is a US based organisation, rooted in Austin. With plenty of music conferences all over the world, why do so many non-US people from the music business still take the risk and travel to SXSW/USA? It’s easy for me to talk, the USA denied my ESTA application some months ago, so I wouldn’t be allowed to enter the country anyway. Why? In 1990 I participated in a student action and occupied the building for student loans in The Netherlands. I was arrested and convicted. I don’t hide this, not even on my ESTA application. But even if I would get the ESTA and tried to enter the USA, for my Trump-critical socials from the last years, they would arrest me or send me right back home. It makes me wonder. Why try to enter the USA under the current policy, with all risks to be arrested for several weeks or to be sent back right away? The border patrol officers are allowed to look at your socials from the last couple of years. When they discover that you posted some Trump critical comments, that’s reason enough to arrest you or to send you back right away. So why take the risk, I seriously wonder, because I can’t believe that all foreign visitors of SXSW are supporters of Trump and his border policy.
