More news about the Corona epidemic: the first "Genius Epidemicus" remedies starting to become known.

Interview with
Dr Carlo Rezzani
Como - North Italy
Carlo: There are several infections occuring, also other Flu virusses. So we must be careful when homeopaths report symptoms and remedies.
As you can read in Kent Lectures on filosophy - lecture 3 (make sure you read this lecture), he explains how to find the most often occuring remedies in an epidemic. There is a misunderstanding, only in some epidemics there is only one remedy which covers the genius epidemics. More often there are several remedies occurring most often. In the Organon you can also find that Hahnemann stressed the fact that we should never prescribe a remedy because we think we already know the disease picture of that epidemic. We need always to individualize and if the symptoms are different for that patient we need to select a better fitting remedy for that patient..

There are also several expressions of the Corona virus infection. So we must collect the symptoms of many Corona cases (which are confirmed after testing) and from these we will find the top remedies running through this epidemic.

Attention also with older English articles, often there is a confusion about the word "general" symptoms. It can be used as "common" or as "generalities".
Kent stressed the need to work out a case from Generalities (most important) to particulars (less important). But on each level the Characteristic symptoms are of the highest importance (so peculiar is that what is not explainable by or common to the pathognomonic picture).

Search for the Epidemic remedies
Read more in this article from Carlo how he is searching for the epidemic remedies of the Corona epidemic (which I translated from Italian, my apology for the quality, but was difficult to translate).

A characteristic of the Corona cases is that often it begins as a moderate "flu", then the patient appear to improve a lot, and then suddenly falls severely ill again (fever, difficult respiration, pneumonia). So make sure you monitor your patients carefully. In some cases you need to act very fast if they relapse suddenly to send them to the hospital.
Severe cases which are already in the hospital and who are on ventilator are very difficult to treat. First of all it is very difficult to be allowed to treat these patients homeopathically, and also the symptoms are becoming very unclear because patients are held in sedation.
See video about how ventilation is being done for ARDS. (see at 5 min 5 sec)

Homeopathic remedies used in the 1880 Spanish Flu epidemic
If you read in old homeopathic journals about the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1880 we can get some insights en encouragement for the current Corona epidemic. One of the current epidemic remedies is for example Bryonia, you can read that it was also very useful in 1880.  Read article here.

Attention if a patient progresses to severe pneumonia the indicated remedy will change. Please do not take any risk and make sure the patient goes to intensive care as soon as possible.

Bryonia
Rene: I had a patient mentioning the modality that any movement of the chest during respiration aggravated. And I saw on TV a women who had been severely sick (a confirmed Corona infection) who was now becoming better, who mentioned "violent pains as if knives had been stuck in her back/chest". Carlo: yes that is one of the characteristic symptoms of Bryonia "stitching pains", Search in Synthesis "remedy Bry. + the word stitch + chest" and you will see how strong this runs through this remedy.

Carlo:... More misunderstandings
There is a lot of wrong information going around, the key symptoms of a Corona infection are not typical Flu or Coryza type of symptoms but:
1. Fever
2. (dry) cough
3. Muscle/joint pain
5. Headache
see this video at 14 min 50 sec

Also be careful, although mostly elderly patients are at risk to have a serious progression, also some of the younger persons can suddenly progress to a severe state and and can die.

Again be careful, patient who seem to become better, can suddenly become worse again, also with mild cases.

Question: Carlo, how many people will become infected do you think?
In general it is expected that 60% of the world population will become infected in the coming year. And from these infected people the severity will be as follows:
- 80,9% will have Mild symptoms
- 13,8% Severe symptoms
- 4,7% Critical, with a death rate of about >2%.
You can see how Corona is running though the population here in North Italy, we have already more than 6000 deaths.

See this interview with dr Bruce Aylward (see at 6 min 40 sec.)

So we as homeopaths must prepare ourselves for what will come. But if we can see patients quickly when symptoms are still mild, we can prevent most patients from progressing to a critical state. See the article about the Spanish flu and homeopathy.

Farokh Master & Erik Van Woensel
Farokh and Erik both told me that also Hahnemann warned us not to rely too much on favorite remedies, also not during epidemics. See Organon paragraph 257 below
Always individualize, and a case can always be a remedy which you have not listen in your group of the found "epidemic remedies". Most important are the (characteristic) General symptoms which you need to consider first, and from these generalities you work to the (characteristic) locals.

Paul Herscu
In his newsletter nr 8 Paul Herscu described the below remedies:
In terms of the larger remedies, the main effective homeopathic remedies have been, in order of likelihood: Sulphur, Lycopodium, Bryonia, and then less likely Phosphorus, and Arsenicum album. By far, at this moment, the most common remedy is Sulphur.  The more acute remedy seems to be Bryonia.
Here are the most important symptoms the individuals describe:

Sulphur:
1.     Feeling of heat, warmth in the body overall and also in a hot face, eyes, ears, with or without fever. Just a sense of warmth. They may describe burning pain and burning sensations.
2.     As a consequence, they want cool air, feel better in the cool air, and are very thirsty for cool, cold, or icy drinks (but discourage the patient from having ice, see below).
3.     Dryness in the nose, mouth, throat, bronchi. Limited perspiration.
4.     If they have a cough, the cough is felt as dry. If they have a cough, it comes later in the process, not as a first presenting sign.
5.     They are extremely tired, fatigued, and/or sleepy.
6.     They want company, and talk more than the other remedies listed here. As a matter of fact, they feel very comfortable and want to talk to doctors and others about their symptoms.
7.     That said, they may become slightly irritable. Disgusted by the idea of picking up germs from other people.
8.     If they have digestive complaints, which are rare, there may be vomiting or diarrhea or disordered stomach. And while the keynote of the remedy is these discharges being excoriating or acrid, in this instance, at this time, discharges are actually more bland.

Lycopodium:
1.     Feeling of heat alternating with chills. They may feel warm originally, but become more chilly over time.
2.     They may still want cool air, but the thirst here has changed clearly for a preference to warm drinks.
3.     Here too there is dryness in the nose, mouth, throat, bronchi with scant sweat.
4.     Here too, extremely tired, sleepy, and fatigued.
5.     Here the openness found in Sulphur is missing. They become easily irritable early on, perturbed, or annoyed in a ‘flat’ sort of way (the way we sometimes think of Sepia). Here, they do not want to be talked to, do not want to be disturbed or interrupted. They want to just be alone and yet want someone around. But there is this ‘unfeeling’ sensation in their emotions.
6.     They become slightly anxious, mostly around how strange they feel and the dire news, but anxiety is not the predominant feature here, as they are too ‘flat’ for that.

Phosphorus:
1.     Feeling of heat, warmth in the body overall or only as a hot face, eyes, ears, with or without a fever.
2.     Regarding temperature comfort, they may desire cool or warm air
3.     The thirst is very high for cool drinks.
4.     Dryness in the nose, mouth, throat, bronchi, with scant sweat.
5.     Extremely tired, sleepy, fatigued.
6.     Very fearful, wanting very close company, wanting to be held and clearly ameliorated by the comfort of others.
7.     They are restless from the anxiety but easily consoled.

Arsenicum album:
While this is the remedy that everyone mentions, in fact this is less common as the others.
1.     Feeling of heat, warmth in the body overall and also a hot face, eyes, ears, as well as a fever.
2.     However, their desire is warmth.
3.     They have a thirst for warm or room temperature drinks.
4.     Dryness in the nose, mouth, throat, bronchi. No perspiration.
5.     Extremely tired, sleepy, and fatigued.
6.     They are very frightened and anxious and more so from the news when they hear how many died.
7.     They are internally restless, tossing in bed or pacing, and worried about how bad this infection really is.

Bryonia:
1.     Feeling of heat, warmth in the body overall and also a hot face, eyes, ears, as well as potential fever.
2.     The want cool air and great thirst for cool drinks.
3.     Dryness in the nose, mouth, throat, bronchi, with scant sweat.
4.     Extremely tired, sleepy, and fatigued.
5.     They are very ‘actively’ irritable. They really do not want to move or be bothered, yet people bother them. They really do not want to talk. They are monosyllabic, and do not move much.
6.     They are not very restless.

As this is a helpful guide to the symptoms seen thus far, for the homeopath, at this time, I have two requests. The first is, if you interact with a person who has a confirmed COVID-19 case, could you please send me their symptoms, paying most attention to the modalities of the case. And second, as an observation, over the past three decades, when I highlight a specific remedy and indication for that remedy, others take that information as their own, and then sort of add symptoms from the materia medica that are keynotes of that remedy. As mentioned above, most of the time this is both incorrect, and not helpful and actually misguides other prescribers. If those symptoms were present, I would have included them. By doing this you introduce errors into the literature. Can I ask you to keep the data flow as clean as possible. If you want to add anything, can you at least write something like, ‘Paul Herscu ND, MPH gives these indications only, though I want to add this or that.’ Help me try to keep the inaccuracies and noise down and the data clean, as this helps limit confusion and helps the homeopath, but more importantly, the patients in our care, most.

Clinical Prediction Tools
I am in the intense process of developing a Clinical Predication Guideline, but this takes a great deal of time to get accurate. As soon as I have completed this, I will send it out.
Dryness
As you can see, this observation of dryness of the mucous membranes is a common feature for many people with COVID-19. Encourage your patients to drink often, to stay moist and hydrated. This will help keep the viral load down. Sips of warmer water through the day. The virus is sensitive to heat. Try to cut out ice, or very cold drinks. Let’s make it a bit more difficult for it to take hold and set up shop. I still believe that summer warmth will slow this virus down, end the first wave, but the slower we pass it from person to person, the more time we have to come up with a more permanent fix. This is why from the very beginning, we underscored the public health hygienic habits to adopt.   To read all newsletters see here

Fons Vanden Berghe
& Vasillis Ghegas books
Flu remedies

Dr Fons Vanden Berghe: you will do good to study the known Flue remedies. And be careful of the possible complications with weak and elderly patients.
So you must follow the symptoms, that is the best advise. Vasillis Ghegas mentions in his seminar accounts (books) a chapter" the top 16 remedies with their characteristic symptoms during colds and fever. You do well to study these remedies carefully. Also Vithoulkas describes  5 main remedies for Flu in his small booklet, Gels., Bapt., Bry., Eup-per., Rhus-t.

  • There seem to be two types of Corona virusses going around: a Mild and a severe form.
  • The WHO describes the symptoms: Signs & symptoms of Covic-19:  - not sneezing, runny nose. but it is: - fever, - dry cough, - aches and pains, - (some people have also) difficulty breathing.
  • Clinical management mild form,
  • Clinical management severe form
  • The BMJ Guide for UK General practitioner.
  • A suspect case is: if there is fever of at least 38C and at least one of the following symptoms: cough, shortness of breath, Or: feverish feeling in elderly persons. Or an immuno-compromised patient with respiratory symptoms.
Tips for people who have not yet completed a homeopathic education:
- The symptoms which belong to the standard disease picture are usually homeopathically of lower value to find a remedy.
- According to Kent you should work out a case from the Generalities (includes the Mind) to the particulars. And from these of highest value are the (homeopathic) characteristic symptoms. General-modalities are one of the most valuable symptoms (so the modalities which apply to the whole person, or which run through the complete case).
- Hahnemann changed the remedy, when the symptom picture changed.

In RadarOpus library the following titles are
interesting to study:
  • Hering - The Homeopathic Domestic Physiscian (hr4): lees diverse hoofdstukken, mn affections of the chest - chough, - bronchitis, colds etc.
  • Lilienthal's - Homeopathic Therapeutics (ll1), o.a. Febris hectica (sterk wisselende koorts), The section on influenza (42 remedies), the section on cough (170 remedies), section on pneumonia (65 remedies) are discussed.
  • Borland - Influenzas (bl3)
  • Borland - Pneumonias (bl4)
  • Clarke - The prescriber (c8) - Catarrh, - Pneumonia, - Influenza.
  • Tyler - Pointer to the common remedies (tl2) - remedies for common cold, - Influenza, etc.
  • Tyler - Acute conditions (tl3) - Influenza, - Chest meds. Bronchitis, pleurisy, pneumonia. etc.

Boenninghausen approach
VB Method: Scema (Luc De Schepper)
With the Boenninghausen method the most important are the modalities:
Chief Complaint  (I) is the influenza/corona-infection

Modalities (I):
            Main Modality 1
            Main Modality 2
            Main Modality 3

Concomitant Symptoms (I)
Modality 1 of the Concomitant Symptom
Modality 2 of the Concomitant Symptom
Modality 3 of the Concomitant Symptom

CC (I): Sensations
CC (I): Generals

Less important are:
CC (I): Location
CC (I): Pathology

Used at the end to differentiate you can look at:
CC (I): Mental Emotional Changes

Luc uses preferably the Boger-Boenninghausen repertory for the B-method, but can also be done with the Synthesis.
