THOUGHTS WE SHARE
Rob Berends writes: A plea to re-arrange the year! I guess you have this too: wondering why the last few months of the year are always so full! So full with work, so full with shows (especially November), so full with conferences, meetings and events. And so full with acts and events pushing you all the time. It's as if the second half of the year is shorter than the first one! I've often heard that the busy second half of the year is mainly because too many acts and events think 'we need our tour/event to happen before the end of this year!'. But somehow this FOMO-explanation does not quite cut it, I think. It might be much simpler: the second half of the working year is indeed shorter than the first! This is because in the 'western' world, the summer holiday period is focused on July/August, and that is entirely in the second half of the year! So the working year is: 6 months in the first half of the calendar year, and 4 months in the second half. No wonder there is too much pressure on that second half. So here's my simple solution: change the summer holiday period, so that it runs in June and July! This means the working year has 5 months in the first half of the calendar year, and also 5 months in the second half. Sounds good, don't you think? Hilde Spille writes: Diversity and fusion in food, music and life! Dark days, not only for the season. Last month I was reading two very inspiring books, about food. The first one is " Het Voedselbos" by Mac van Dinther, with great pictures! It's about food-forest Ketelbroek, close to my hometown Nijmegen. The forest is only 15 years old, with 350 different edible plants on it, plants from all over the world, from tall trees to small herbs, all supporting each other. For more than seven years already, the harvest is richer than that of the corn fields surrounding the forest. The second book is the recipe book " Baru Belanda" from Pascal Jalhay. It's about 'Indische' cuisine, a fusion cuisine of Dutch and Indonesian, from Dutch colonizers in Indonesia, and from Indonesian people coming to The Netherlands in the '50s, trying to cook Indonesian food with Dutch ingredients. Coming from a close homogeneous community in a very small village, I find diversity and fusion liberating! Not only when it is about food, but also in music. That's why it is so important to me to work for artists that cross musical borders, like I Muvrini, Pussy Riot, Taimane, Elisapie. Actually, when looking at my roster, in one way or the other, all artists I work for cross musical borders. Crossing borders means that you engage with and get inspired by what's across the border. Italian food got inspired by noodles from the far east and by tomatoes from South America. Nowadays you can't imagine Italian food without pasta or tomatoes. Rock music was inspired by blues, folk/country and new technology. When moving from Germany to The Netherlands, I got inspired by the Dutch culture. I loved it, and I was able to stay. I lost part of what was familiar to me, but I gained so much more. The cultural diversity in me makes it easy to switch my point of view. I would wish that every one could choose the country they would love to live in. But politicians in many countries are talking again about closing the borders and to build walls. Wouldn't it be better to engage with other cultures and get inspired by them? Instead of being so afraid to lose something, we could focus on what we have to gain when getting inspired by each other.
