THOUGHTS WE SHARE
Rob Berends writes: Go Wild at a Festival We've just had the ultimate music festival period. Millions of people around the globe attend festivals every year, and especially the bigger live music companies depend on festivals financially more and more. Music festivals can be very profitable, and that's why private-equity companies and similar financial institutions buy up festivals all around us. Not only are music festivals very diverse, but the expectations and attitudes from their audience members are so too. Some go there to experience a sense of community, some go there to go wild and try to shake off daily worries, some go there to absorb different musical styles and cultures and get to know acts they did not know yet. Since the '60s (of the previous century, of course), music festivals are an established phenomenon around the world. These have always been a place where not only the audience members are free to express themselves, but of course also the artists. Lately however, this freedom is under threat more and more: those audience members who see a festival merely as a place to vent their frustration with daily life, as a place for escapism only, want to silence other audience members as well as artists, something that strongly conflicts with the history of music festivals. These escapists have been around forever too, of course, and are perfectly entitled to celebrate their festival visit as they please, as long as they do not take that same freedom away from others. How come that the boycott-voices seem stronger these days? Or are they merely being amplified by outside forces? I think part of the explanation is the current reactionary political climate worldwide; another part of the explanation could very well be that the boycott-voices are welcomed by the new-style owners of festivals, the private-equity companies and other vulture capitalists, whose main interest is profit, not art, culture or freedom. Hilde Spille writes: Fresh start! In September 1995, exactly 30 years now, I joined Rob and his colleagues at Paperclip Agency. I started with working a couple of hours a week, doing back-office stuff only. Within a couple of months, I was working full-time. I never expected to like it so much, to live and work together with Rob. A couple of years later I started to work as booking agent and became partner in the company. Last week, after a burn-out and being absent from the office since early May, I slowly started to return to the office again, for a couple of hours a week, doing back-office stuff only. History repeating itself? Anyhow, I love being back! It feels so great, cycling together to the office again with Rob, exchanging information at the office, etc. The context is very different though. In the last 30 years I gained a lot of knowledge and experience, worked for many many amazing artists. Right now, I’m still rebuilding my strength, and Rob is still taking care of all the shows for my artists. Though I hope to able to take over again in full strength soon! I’ll keep you updated.
