Huun Huur Tu avails on a very short term
Due to shows abroad that can not happen, Huun Huur Tu is staying a couple of days longer in The Netherlands this month. There are three extra days available for workshops and/or shows on a very short term, see below for dates.

Sachal Vasandani gets rave reviews for album "Best Life Now"
In February, jazz-singer Sachal Vasandani released his new album "Best Life Now", with drum maestro Nate Smith in the producer's chair. British magazine Jazzwise gave it a **** review while mentioning several songs as outstanding: " ‘Call Me’ is a standout, with Vasandani’s instantly memorable vocal hook enveloped by brilliant pocket playing from all hands", "A duet with the wondrous Gretchen Parlato, ‘Right On Time’, melts the heart, while ‘Don’t Give Up On Me’, driven ever onwards by Charles Altura’s beautiful finger-picked guitar, steps into classic Leonard Cohen singer-songwriter territory."

Killing Joke made me cry
Killing Joke never made me cry, although I did love them back then.
But last week they did.
A live recording from 1985 (‘The Wait‘, Rockpalast/Loreley Fest, Germany) brought me to tears.
It was a combination of the band’s appearance and sound, and the current development of the world towards fascism, that made me so emotional.
I was part of the squatters movement and the broad progressive movement in those days. My home town Nijmegen was an important one in those movements, both in The Netherlands and internationally.
We were also a tight-knit movement, within each section, and between those sections. We were militant but against militarism, we were powerful and welcoming, we were pro-peace but steadfast, we were radical democratic and pro-freedom, and against capitalism and the restrictive parliamentary ‘democracy’, we were against fascism and stalinism, we were against nationalism and pro international solidarity.
We had many successes, but these days it all seems to have been in vain: the current world politics can make you feel powerless. ‘Bully boys out fighting, it’s just the same old game’.
Seeing Killing Joke on stage, with their (at the time) militant stance, their powerful dance movements, their overwhelming music, their mesmerized audience, made me feel nostalgic. This combined with the current threats to freedom and solidarity, I could not help myself and started to cry.
But a few minutes later I was able to turn it around: I realized that there ARE things we can do. We can listen to and promote music-that-matters, that we can relate to, that is uplifting and inspiring. And we can, also at my age, support local solidarity initiatives even more.
I was able to turn my negative emotions into (more) positive action. And so can you. It helps others and it helps you. Find your local solidarity initiatives and community centers, for voluntary work there. Or check what actions and demonstrations you can join nearby (in The Netherlands there’s the website watkanikdoen.nl (what can I do) with an overview).
I have to admit that one thing in that Killing Joke video did put me off: the guitarist’s pleated trousers … oh well, you can’t have it all! I’ve forgiven him!

Economy and festivals
There are many uncertainties in the economy of western countries nowadays. One of the results is rising costs, for festivals and audiences alike. Major festivals still manage to continue. They sell out in record times, while boutique festivals are struggling to make ends meet. In the last months, several mid-range festivals had to quit due to high costs.
This does not mean, that major festivals can lean back. The festival audience is looking more for a price-quality balance than before.
In a survey about complaints of festival-goers, the complaint about (too) high ticket prices is at no. 2 of the 9 most common complaints. In the last decade, festival ticket prices have increased by 55-97% ! The complaint includes additional fees and costs for premium experiences. No. 5 of the complaints is about the expensive food and drinks, overpriced merchandise at no. 9.
Another line of complaints is about facilities. Overcrowding, including too long lines for food, restrooms and merchandise, is the no. 1 of complains, with insufficient facilities like restrooms and water stations at no. 4.
Poor sound quality, especially farther from the stage, is at no. 3, security issues at no. 6. Of course there are also complaints about issues that festivals can't control, like weather (no. 7) or cancelled acts (no. 8).
While costs for festivals are rising, the audience wants to spend less money and still have a great experience with good facilities. The challenge for festivals in the future will be, to find the right balance between not-too-high ticket prices and enough quality. If festivals want to continue, they will have to offer a great experience to the audience, with great artists as well as good facilities, while not over-stretching the purse of that same audience.
